What Is Crystal Meth?

Some people who are depressed take methamphetamine as a way of coping with their depression, but in the long run it only leads to more intense depression. Meth has also been known to increase sexual desire, and this may be a reason why some people abuse it.

Where Does Meth Come From?

Methamphetamine is sometimes prescribed for obesity.  It can also be prescribed for ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and even narcolepsy. However, “crystal” meth is a drug made illegally on the streets by changing the chemical properties of some over-the-counter medicines. Manufacturing crystal meth typically includes reducing the ephedrine or pseudoephedrine that is present in allergy and sinus medication. In the United States, a usual meth lab uses a process called the ‘Red, White, and Blue’, which involves hydrogenation of the hydroxyl group on the ephedrine or pseudoephedrine particle. The red stands for red phosphorus, white represents the ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, and the blue is for the iodine. Manufacturing crystal meth is very risky to the one’s creating it and hazardous to the community where they are making it. White phosphorus with sodium hydroxide can produce poisonous phosphine gas, typically as a consequence of too high of temperature for the red phosphorus, plus white phosphorus can catch fire by itself and explode, destroying the meth lab and possibly lives.
