Alcohol – America’s Gateway Drug

More kids under the age of 18 die from alcohol related deaths than any other drug.  Alcohol is a drug, and is more dangerous than many others.  Alcohol can be attributed to over one third of fatal automobile accidents involving teenagers.

Alcohol also plays a big part in teenage crimes from shoplifting to date rape.  Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, reports that only 5 percent of vicious crimes at our nation’s colleges are not alcohol related.  Over 90% of rapes on college campuses are alcohol related.

Drinking at an Early Age

The age at which people start drinking seems to be getting younger and younger.

The American Academy of Pediatrics did a survey and found that one-fifth of 9 and 10 year olds have been drunk.  40% of children in the sixth grade reported experiencing peer pressure to drink alcohol.  Half of American children in the eighth grade have used alcohol once or more.  80% of our nation’s high school seniors used alcohol within one month of the survey.

The Marketing of Alcohol

Alcohol manufacturers are targeting younger, potential consumers by marketing to their demographic.  They do this by selling wine coolers, and alcoholic beverages that tastes like lemonade and other sweet drinks.

About 20% of drinkers develop a total addiction to alcohol and battle with it for a huge part of their lives.  If great amounts of liquor must be used to yield drunkenness, the person is indicating a tolerance for alcohol — something all alcohol addicts share and heavy addiction is probably going to develop. Tolerance of alcohol and the danger of becoming addicted are thought to be genetic, though there is increasing evidence that a propensity to abuse substances is more environmental than anything. Regardless, kids with parents who have had problems with alcohol addiction could be at greater danger for becoming hooked on alcohol if they were to ever start drinking.

There are more deaths related to alcohol each year than all the other drugs combined.  The socially acceptable, legal substance known as alcohol leaves far more destruction in its path than any other drug known to man.  This may be due to the fact that alcohol is legal.  Because it is legal, more people use it than other drugs which by default alone may be the reason it causes more damage.

Whatever the case, alcohol abuse and addiction are big problems in this country and in our world.  The more we educate ourselves about this substance the less likely we will be to fall prey to its destructive ways.
